Landmannalaugar Safari – Super Jeep Day Tour
Your journey begins in Reykjavík, where you will head out into the fertile farmlands of southern Iceland aboard a specially built Super Jeep. As you travel, the snow-covered peak of Hekla, Iceland’s most famous active volcano, will come into view. Known in medieval Europe as the fabled entrance to hell, Hekla has erupted approximately 20 times since the country’s settlement in the ninth century. You will drive directly to the edge of the youngest lava field, formed during the 2000 eruption, and if weather conditions permit, you will ascend along the volcano’s ridge to an elevation of 900 meters above sea level for a splendid view of the surrounding region. From the base of the volcano, your professional driver will navigate a rugged mountain track past dramatic lava fields and explosion craters. You will traverse several streams and rivers in your Super Jeep as you venture deep into the interior paradise of Landmannalaugar. Once you arrive, you will have time to explore the unique geological landscape or enjoy a refreshing dip in the natural geothermal hot springs stream, so be sure to pack your bathing suit and towel for the experience. As you head out of the interior, you will visit the striking explosion crater Ljótipollur before making a pit stop at the highland hotel at Hrauneyjar for coffee and a break. Your return route takes you down the picturesque Þjórsárdalur valley, where you will stop to admire the photogenic Hjálparfoss waterfall. This full-day excursion offers a memorable geological adventure through some of Iceland’s most colorful and crater-filled terrain.
